The Radio

Exploring Social Reform Through the Radio

After Guglielmo Marconi's wireless transatlantic transmissions in 1901, inventors started trying to develop a method to which this form of communication could be made available to the whole world. Radio technology developed faster, and by the early 1900s, it had gained enormous popularity as a communication and entertainment medium. With the birth of commercial radio broadcasting sometime during the 1920s, it brought about drastic changes in the way people used to receive news, music, and information. Radio depends on the family as socializers for live updates of all sorts of news and creating connecting communities like never before. Therefore, this was an instrument for social change as it was capable of broadcasting speeches, debates, and awareness programs with regards to some of the social issues faced Then Roosevelt, amongst others, provided a channel through which "Fireside Chats" were initiated over the radio as an attempt to bring people together and effect social change. Therefore, radio was an entertainer, educator, and organizer for progressive causes.
