The Newspaper

During the late 19th century up until late 20th century and into the early 21st century, newspapers had rapidly come to be regarded as prestigious arbiters of information and opinion shaping. The inception of the Penny press during the 1830s led to its mass popularity since the newspapers now became cheap to purchase, thereby effectively increasing their circulation. By the later part of the century, the very word 'newspaper' had gone into household usage, helped in no small measure by many technical enhancements like the rotary press and the telegraph that offered speedy means for printing and news reporting. Newspaper writers often proposed laws like from laws to women suffrage, to civil rights. Investigative Journalism by Nellie Bly and Upton Sinclair raised a hue against social ills and abuses within the government. Thus making newspapers stand as a tool for societal changes.
